Ready for Winter

Our first frost date is Dec 5. This morning there was light frost in the garden.
Tonight’s forecast calls for temps in the mid to low 30's and rain.

Today we built hoop houses over bed 2 and 3 to protect the onions, garlic, carrots and broccoli not only from frost but from the squirrels.

I will be planting potatoes in about 6 weeks. I can't wait!

  1. I don't know if the squirrels would bother that stuff or not - the onions would be ok on their own, because I don't know of any animal that will eat onions. I really like the potato bins that hubs built - especially the way a person can access them for harvest.

  2. Hi EG,
It's not so much that the squirrels are eating my crops it more that they are digging around the beds and pull up my crops. I've had to reseed carrots and lettuce in bed 2 three times now. It's all out war with them now. You should see me on the weekends when I see a squirrels coming down the fence I bang on the window to scare them away or I will walk out to the yard and shush them out of the beds. I have one female that will run up a tree and start yelling at me. It's really funny.

I hope the potato bins produce as well as they look.
