Haven Family House Garden Project Part 2

Not much going on in my garden just yet so I thought I would give you an update on the Haven Garden.

Sunday I wanted to finish stringing out the expanded veggie garden and lay some newspaper and cardboard down where the "Kids" flower boxes will go. Sweet husband said he wanted to go with me and help.. Nice! I can use all the help I can get. About a half hour into the project my son called to see where we were. Once he found out we were at Haven working in the garden he said "I'll be right over." SWEET! More man power.

I put my son to work mowing down the weeds while husband cut cardboard and helped in the expanded garden. We even had two young volunteers helping us. A 4 year old boy and his 11 year old sister, both living at Haven Family House.

Photo Below: It's a little hard to see.. this is where we marked out the new vegetable beds.
I'm hoping the Eagle Scouts will take this project and help us build the beds and trellises.

Monday we had our first volunteer group come out. This team of 16 from SalesForce.com were in town from all over the world. They took some time out of their busy schedule to do some community service work. What an awesome group of people. They helped clean out all 8 raised beds and planted vegetables, herbs and stawberries in 4 of the beds, all donated by SalesForce.com Click on photos below for a larger view.

The scarecrow was donated by one of the clients living at the Haven Family House. How sweet was that!

Would you like to be a part of the Haven Family Garden Project? There are many ways you can help. Financial contributions would be used for garden supplies such as compost, plants, tools, and materials to build trellises, raised beds and so much more so we can organically and sustainably grow nutritious food for the homeless families and individuals that Shelter Network serves.

The number of people served during fiscal year 2008/2009 at Haven Family House was 251 children and 155 adults. When more food is grown and harvested than can be used by the families at Haven Family House, volunteers transport the fruits and vegetables to other Shelter Network locations on the Peninsula including Redwood Family House, Maple Street Shelter and First Step for Families.

If you would like to make a donation to the Haven Family House Garden Project go to Shelter Network Financial Contributions and click on DONATE NOW! choose "Other amount" and in the comments box type "Haven Family House Garden Project"

If you live in the Bay Area and would like to volunteer your time in the garden please contact Lynnelle Bilsey Volunteer Coordinator at Shelter Network.

It is my personal goal to help Shelter Network increase their prodution of fruits and vegetables. Won't you join me?
