Independence Day Harvest

Hope you all had a wonderful Independence Day!

I was hoping to harvest some corn today but it isn't ready. I have come to the conclusion that the corn is not getting enough sun.

As always ckick on the photos for larger view.

Photo Below: Today's harvest came in at 2 pounds putting my total harvest at 39 pounds.

Photo Below: I have not paid much attention to the small wonder spaghetti squash. Just waiting for the 9 of them to ripen. Well yesterday I saw this...

...and this...

I have eight more for a total of 17 on two plants! I don't know if they will all ripen before the Fall shade takes over. I will keep you posted.

Photo Below: I pulled out the snap peas and planted a handful of pole beans... or so I thought. I mixed up the seed packet and put in bush beans. When I realized what I had done I didn't want to dig out the seeds so I just planted some pole beans as well. They are all starting to come up and it only took three days for them to sprout and within a few days some of them are already 3 to 4 inches tall.

Photo Below: The carrots in bed 4 have already sprouted. Thanks Granny! Your tip worked really well for me.

Photo Below: I pulled the rest of the garlic out of bed 4. I'll leave them out in the sun for a week or more to dry. Now that I know I can grow garlic.. though they did not get very big this time. I will try again.

Next post... Pumpkins, peppers and pumpkin on a stick.

June Garden Update

Here are some photos I took in the last two weeks.

Photo Below: Bed 1 the cherry tomatoes are getting so tall that I will need a step ladder to pick them off the top. The arch is about 7 feet tall and the vines are two to three feet above that.

Photo Below: Bush tomatoes... I can't wait until these are ripe.

Photo Below: View of beds 2 and 3

Photos Below: The watermelons in bed two are getting bigger. They are the size of a golf ball maybe even a little bigger.

Photos Below: The antique marigold and the cilantro in the right corner of bed 3 is shading the basil. I pulled the cilantro since it has bolted and moved the marigold.

There that's better....

Photo Below: Marigold moved to potato bed two since is was empty.

Photos Below: The basil is much happier....

...when it's not over 90 degrees. I had to cover them with shade cloth for a few days.

Photos Below: The bell peppers are really starting to take off now that the weather has warmed up.

I did, however pull the runt bell pepper. I'll be planting some lettuce in it's place.

Photo Below: Bed 2

Photos Below: In bed 4 I pulled out all the lettuce and reseeded with carrots...

...and used Granny's trick of covering them to keep from drying out.

Photos Below: The onions seem to be putting on some size.

Photos Below: The garlic has died back...

They are not very big... I'll wait to pull the second square to see if they get any bigger.

Photo Below: Bush beans ready to pick.

Photo Below: I pulled out the round zucchini. I wasn't getting much of a harvest from them for the space. I have reseeded the empty squares with lettuce. This area is a bit shaded from the bush beans.

Photos Below: I pulled out the potatoes in bed 1...

very low yield but very good.

Photo Below: The snap peas cannot decide if they want to die off or put out new growth. I'm just going to let them be and see what they do.

Photo Below: Strawberry bed is growing very well and is starting to put out runners.

Photos Below: The Pumpkin on a stick is doing very well and it looks like I will have mini pumpkins on a stick this Fall. I was not sure if this plant was going to be true to seed when I saved the seeds from an arrangement that was given to me last Fall.

Hope you enjoyed the photos.

This Weeks Garden Update

Welcome Follower "crazychica8685" Thanks for following my blog!

I haven't been in the garden much the past few days. Friday I had a High School Graduation to go to and Saturday was spent at the Sunset "Celebration Weekend 2009" with my sister. No real highlight at the "Celebration". We had fun checking things out and signing up to win free trips and cars. Oh sis did win a two night stay in Carson City NV on a wheel spin.. I won a pen...Ha!

Today I watered and had a few things to cut back. After that Hubby and I went to the driving range to get some swinging and putting practice in. I haven't played golf yet this year. I didn't do too bad for not picking up my clubs since last Novemeber.

Now for some garden photos taken this week... Click on the photos for a larger view.

Photo Below: June 4th Harvest. The raspberries came in at 8 oz's (106 berries)

Photo Below: June 6th Harvest. The baby carrots were so good!

Not pictured: On June 7th I picked 1 English cucumber, 1 round zucchini and 5 oz's of raspberries.

Photo Below: Yellow bush beans.

Photo Below: The sungold cherry tomatoes are starting to ripen.

Photos Below: The next 4 photos are of the cucumbers. There's about 12 of them right now and more coming.

Photo Below: I have one runt bell pepper that hasn't grown since I planted it. It's trying so hard to put out a few buds. I may pull it and put some more carrots in. My peppers look great and I have lots of buds but I don't have any fruit on the full size peppers and only 4 on the baby peppers.

Photo Below: The pumpkins are getting bigger. Can't wait to make pumpkin pie!

Photo Below: The nasturtium is growing up into the spaghetti squash.

Photo Below: The watermelons are not doing much of anything. I am getting flowers but more male than females. I think they will be a bust.

Photo Below: Ok now this last photo was taken on June 3rd. I was watering the tomatoes and uncovered this with the water. It's organic from what I can tell and the little black pod like things in there look to be seeds but I couldn't tell. At first I thought it was some sort of hive but I didn't see anything crawling or flying out of it. I removed it and see more "growing" in the bed. Has anyone ever seen anythng like this before?

Tonight's Harvest, Cherry Tomatoes and a Looper

I picked up another 2.8 oz's today to bring my total harvest so far this season to 2.4 pounds.

I pulled another butterhead lettuce at 1.5 oz's. Leaf lettuce came in at 0.7 and four sugar snap pea's at 0.6 oz's. I didn't count the the two alpine strawberries.

While I was taking my nightly tour of the garden beds I saw three cherry tomatoes in bed 1. Looks like I'm getting a little pollination even with the low bee count.

On April 11th I found this female cabbage butterfly visiting my garden...

and on Sunday April 26th I found this guy in my container of red leaf lettuce...

Turns out this is a cabbage looper, the offspring of the cabbage butterfly. I found more than just the one in the container. I'll be keeping a close eye on everything now.

What I learned today... next time plant more sugar snap peas.
