A moth is just a moth unless it's a...

This morning before I headed off to work I opened the back door to check on my seedlings in the greenhouse. When I returned to the door I saw sweet husband looking at the ceiling in the kitchen and said " That thing is huge!" That thing is a White Lined Sphinx also known as a hummingbird moth.

Here are a few photos I took before we set it free.

  1. Kill it!!! Ha. Whew...I've been busy setting up the new blog, but see that you've been busy, too! I'm jealous on the compost....I'll see what I have in about 3 weeks.

  2. EG,

I couldn't kill it... it was just too big... size of a baby hummingbird.

Your new blog is coming along very nicely and I'm sure your compost is as well.

  3. Wow! Those things are cool! I've never seen one in person but they seem amazingly large. I'd love to get a close up look at one. Well, not too close! BTW I'm glad you didn't kill it. =)

  4. What a great opportunity to share with us what this moth is. I wouldn't have even known the name of this little creature.

  6. Jenn,

Yes it was cool to see up close but kind of creepy too... Ha, what a girly thing to say.
I'll have to be on the look out for caterpillars it may have left behind. They are kind of creepy too.

    Daisy,

Glad I could offer some useful info. :-)

  7. I like looking at bugs but I wouldn't want to snuggle up next to one if you get my drift. I've even been known to scream when surprised by a spider, though in the next moment I'll go catch it and toss it outside. As long as the bug doesn't do anything too unexpected I'm golden. lol...

It would be cool if you found the caterpillars though I suspect that wouldn't be till late summer?

  8. Unless I'm mistaken, Hummingbird moths are in their previous stage "Horn Worms" which have a voracious appetite for tomato leaves. Should have killed it?

    =8-)
