A Little Time in the Garden

After running some errands this morning I made my way out to the yard about noon.

I had a few things on my to do list I wanted to get done…

* Put bark nuggets down between the beds.
* Added to the compost bin and turned it.
* Covered beds 2, 3 and 4 with clear plastic to warm them up.
* Planted Strawberries into the strawberry bed.
* Covered strawberry bed with clear plastic to keep them from getting over watered from the rain.
* Planted Yukon Gold and Early Rose potatoes into potato bed 1.

I also had on my planting schedule to plant carrots, onion sets and garlic into the beds. I’m going to hold off for a few days. We have another rain storm starting tonight through Monday.

Here are a few photos from today… Click on photos for larger view

  2. Liisa, I really like the low profile covers you put over those two boxes. It's even given me some ideas for mine later. Thanks for stimulating my brain!

  4. Jenn,

Yes they do. I can't wait to get planting in them. It won't be long now.

  5. EG,

The main reason for doing it was to keep the rain running off them and not pooling up. It does look cool. Looking forward to what you will come up with.

  6. Granny,

Thank you! I have a question for you. I see you posted on the SFG forum that you only plant your bush beans in the outside squares for easy reaching.... what do you plant in the middle squares next to them? I'm not very tall and have a short reach.. I may have to rethink bed 4

  7. Liisa, this year I've planned on lots of parsnips in the center with beans on both sides. I won't have to reach for the parsnips until well after the bush beans are finished. Onions would work well too.... not spring onions, but large bulbed onions that would stay on the ground for some time. I'm planning on pole beans for my main crop, the bush beans for early eating.

  8. Thanks Granny,

I don't do parsnips... but onions are in the plan... but I thought you couldn't plant beans and onions together... or so says my garden bible. I was thinking about slow bolt lettuce. They would be shaded by the bush beans. What do you think?

  9. You're right about the onions...not around beans, I was thinking height not companions. My second choice would be beets or carrots, but I'd keep some short fencing handy to hold the beans away from them a bit if necessary. It may not be a problem with just the one-foot width of beans. I think it just has to be trial and error, maybe my green beans were just over fertilized monsters ;-)

I'm actually not utilizing the full 4' width of my beds, I'm planting a 1' wide strip down the center and a 1' wide strip down each side, which leaves 6" wide unplanted strips between the crops. That's where my soaker hoses will go.

  10. Thanks Granny!

I think I have it figured out now. I'll have to move a few things around.

I have some very nice short fencing I could use.
