Corn

I planted my first square of Bon Jour Early Bicolor Sweet Corn (Renee's Garden seeds) in Bed 2 today. I'll be planting a total of 12 squares with four in each. I have my next set of four started in the greenhouse and should be able to plant them outside in the next few days. I will start four seeds every fews days until I have enough to fill all 12 squares. I hope I have the timing down so we will have 2 to 4 corn ripen a few days apart.

When I picked up one of the pots the roots were growing out of the bottom.

The watermelon seems to be struggling a bit.
The nasturtiums is ready to be planted out in the garden.



Cucumber are growing better now that it has warmed up.



The winter squash has just about out grown it's 4 inch pot. I may need to pot up one more time before planting out into Bed 4 which still doesn't have full sun.

    Wow! Look at how big the leaves are on your winter squash! Ah to be that much closer to the equator. ;^) I won't even be able to start seeds for squash till next week. ::joneses:: I hope you figured out the right timing for your corn too. I'll be paying attention to that when I go to plant mine.

    BTW I thought it was 1 corn plant per sq.ft. (1/1) Are you planting 4/1? Have you had success with that in the past? I'd really like to plant a bit more dense then 1/1 if I thought I could get away with it...

    Hi Jenn,

    Yes I'm planting 4/1. I can't remember where I read it but you can plant corn as close as 4 to 8 inches and plant them in blocks not rows. They will pollinate better this way. Makes sense for a small garden like mine and since this year is one big experiment, I'm going with it.

    Liisa, unless your garden bed is 12" deep, I don't feel you will like the results from that spacing on corn. One of my good friends (dapper, over at "Old White's Mill") did 4/sqft last year and said he would never do it again. I'm planting 24 squares of peaches and cream, and will be using 1/sqft. The watermelons are one of the last things to really start running, so I wouldn't worry about that. Everything looks great! I'm green with envy...

    Thanks for the info! I really appreciate it. The bed is 8" with about 3 to 4" of good garden soil under the bed. I hope that will be good enough. I have time to change my plan so I'll give it some thought.
